Wind turbine - basics

Wind turbine - maintenance

Modern wind turbines are electronically monitored, with a central data site reporting any malfunctions. A technician will then be sent to the site to troubleshoot and repair the turbine. Regular maintenance is also necessary: interior and exterior inspections, testing electrical, mechanical and hydraulic components and systems, torque checks, lubrication, etc. These on-site inspections and tests are informed by technical and mechanical knowledge, but real competence comes from on-the-ground experience: inspecting and testing full-scale wind turbine installations. Our virtual reality modules make this possible from within the training room, significantly reducing the time and cost necessary to train and evaluate wind turbine maintenance technicians.

Wind turbine - repair

Wind turbine maintenance and repair technicians are often tasked with work that requires not only technical competence but heightened physical strength and awareness: technicians will at times be required to perform exterior repairs at heights above 80 meters, working exposed on top of the nacelle. The technician must choose, wear, and properly attach fall protection equipment. Even with this protection, the technician must work carefully and never lose focus. What might seem easy in training is another matter when looking down 80 meters or more, which is why our module puts the technician in such a position in the safety of virtual reality, allowing him to experience the risks while allowing instructors or managers to evaluate his performance and aptitude for the tasks at hand.

Wind turbine - technology

Alongside solar energy, wind power is leading the way to a clean energy future. What is the technology underlying the conversion of kinetic energy into electrical energy? How can this be used in large-scale “wind farms” to power entire towns and cities? How do wind farms and solar fields meet, and where do they diverge? Using the immersive, interactive, engaging experience of virtual reality, topics ranging from political to environmental to technical are studied and explored in 360°. An introductory course in wind turbine technology equally applicable to technicians, urban infrastructure planners, energy transition proponents, and smart grid engineers.

Wind turbine - production

How is kinetic energy converted into electrical energy? What are the calculations and limits of a wind turbine’s generation potential? What wind conditions are necessary to produce sufficient energy to justify an investment in wind power? Through this module, participants will be guided through how wind turbines work, will be able to calculate the electrical output of a wind turbine, and will understand measurements of wind speed.
